Generally application icons are used within in software of specific computer applications.They are a built-in part of the software. Mainly applicable in Software like MS Word, Photoshop, Internet Explorer, Excel.
Website Icons :
Just like application icons they are usually icons people can universally associate with the given function. Mainly applicable in Internet (website) - Interface, navigation
Avatars :
These icons are representations of users in a shared virtual reality. Within online virtual communities and Internet forums. Avatars are pictures mainly applicable in Web Forums and some Bulletin Boards.
Desktop icons :
The most commonly recognized icons by most people. They are used to convey purpose of an available function on a computer. On a very graphic oriented Windows environment such as Windows XP the common desktop icons you might see are “My Computer”, “Recycle Bin”, and various file folders with labels.Mainly applicable in OS Desktop - Windows, Macintosh, Linux KDE/Gnome
Emotion icons :
Emotion icons are images (icons) which allow participants to express their opinions visually. The icon image emotion icons are a relatively new idea and allow flexibility for better conveying variations and subtleties in human expression.Emotion icons are also called smileys. Mainly applicable in Chat Software - AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, Chat programs
Rogue Icons :
Rogue Icons tend to fit into more than one icon type because of their size and format. So really they are less confined than the standard icon types but they cause a lot of confusion since they do not fit into any one category.
Misfits are icons that simply don't fit into ANY category
